Confirmation of the Red-Backed Rat Snake Oocatochus rufodorsatus (Cantor, 1842) (Squamata: Colubridae) in Amur Oblast’, Russian Federation

Abstract


The existence of the Red-backed rat snake, Oocatochus rufodorsatus [syn: Elaphe rufodorsata], in Amur Oblast’ has been contentious. Earlier researchers suggested its range extended west to the Zeya River, but failures to find specimens have left most current biologists to believe the northernmost range of this species along the Amur River is actually around Voskresenovka, Khabarovsk Kray. Here we report the possible existence of a population of Red-backed rat snakes in Amur Oblast’ west of the Zeya River.
