Jaw Musculature of Turtles: Structure, Functions, and Evolutionary Conservatism

Nikolai N. Iordansky

Abstract

The patterns of morphofunctional organization and nomenclature of chelonian jaw muscles are reconsidered. The homology of jaw muscles in turtles and other reptilian groups is discussed, with special consideration of intramandibular muscles and aponeurosis. A general Bauplan of jaw musculature is very constant in all the recent turtles, in spite of the essential differences in their feeding ecology. Causes of the evolutionary conservatism of the Bauplan of chelonian jaw muscles are discussed.
