About the Collection of and the Research on Agamid Lizards at the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK) in Bonn, Germany

Abstract

In this paper, I give an overview of the agamid lizard collection of the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig (ZFMK), Bonn, and I review the different sources where they stem from. The first nucleus was laid around 1900 by the museum’s founder Alexander Koenig, an ornithologist, five decades before an own herpetology section was created at ZFMK. A historically extremely important acquisition was the herpetological collection of the Zoologisches Museum, University of Göttingen, which contained also valuable agamid specimens including historical types and dating back to the early 19th century. Most agamids were acquired in connection with herpetodiversity research projects in Africa and SE Asia, carried out from the 1970s onwards either by myself or by my numerous master and Ph.D. students. I also review the research on these lizards performed at ZFMK. Important milestone contributions were made through the doctoral theses of two DAAD fellowship holders (1980: Phylogeny of the whole family; 1997: Monographic taxonomic treatment of whorl-tailed agamas) while two of my Ph.D. students provided further landmark studies (2009: Collective papers on Uromastyx; 2010: Phylogeny and biogeography of the African Agamidae), the latter culminating in the organization of a first international symposium «DeAgamis» at ZFMK (2008) and the publication of a subsequent proceedings volume (2009).
