Record Size of Indian Star Tortoise: Geochelone elegans (Schoepff, 1795)

Abstract


The largest ever recorded live specimen of Geochelone elegans was found from a public garden of in Vadodara City, Gujarat, India, and now in the collection of Sayaji Baug Zoo, Vadodara, Gujarat, India. It is the largest and the heaviest specimen of the species ever recorded. Its age was determined estimated to be over 55 years with the count of growth rings on shell and the same was then compared with the data plot of a known 21 year old captive female of the species.
