Abstract

We examined some hematological parameters and the cytomorphometry of blood cells (erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes) in eight adult individuals (3 ♂♂; 5 ♀♀) of Ommatotriton ophryticus from Uzungöl village (Trabzon Province), Turkey. In 1 mm3 of blood, we estimated the erythrocyte count as 1.10 × 105 per 1 mm3 (0.80 × 105 – 1.50 × 105), hemoglobin amount as 8.10 (7.00 – 9.80) g/dl, hematocrit value as 30.37 (26.00 – 36.00)%, mean cell volume as 2852.98 (2000.00 – 3750.00) fl, mean cell hemoglobin as 771.27 (546.66 – 975.00) pg/cell, mean cell hemoglobin concentration as 27.52 (22.22 – 33.84)%, and the serum total protein as 3.21 (2.25 – 4.50) g/L. The hematology of the O. ophryticus appears to be similar to other urodelan species mentioned in the literature. Although small differences were observed between sexes in terms of these values, some were statistically significant.
